I just watched Edward Scissorhands.
The ending pissed me off.
I liked the character, Edward. The strong silent type that was gothic in style. I have imagined before a character that could summon any metal object to use at will. Edward was like this, only that he had only knives, and that he was bound by them.
The movie proceeded as most would expect it to, and what thrilled me was not the style of the plot (really, how many times now has that plot been used? Countless) but the specifics of how some of the details were carried out. They were imaginative combinations.
What pissed me off was the girl/woman's comments at the end of the movie. The girl asked,
"Why don't you go up to visit him?" And her answer?
"I'm an old woman now. I want him to remember me as a young woman."
Denial. Motherfucking denial. Wishful thinking, and it annoys the fuck out of me. It reminds me of my mom asking me to smile for the camera, refusing Pauline a visit (not just because she didn't want to deal with her, but "to protect you from her"), and not going to Connie at her death bed because "I don't want to remember her like that."
In my opinion, the girl doesn't deserve to see him!
I wanted to be with and study Pauline so I would have live showing of manic depressiveness, and perhaps learn a bit about myself in the process. I want to frown for the camera when I feel down, rather than lying and showing that I look happy. It's why I take video and not pictures. I don't want just the part of reality that suits me - I want it unfettered, unfiltered. I wanted to go inside of Connie's house before it was destroyed and rebuilt, I wanted to see Connie at her dea... well, actually, I didn't really care. I was just annoyed at mom's remark. Mostly, I was just sad that she didn't live long enough for me to help her financially. Then again, see how well that's working out!
Is everyone trying to deny reality!? Why the focus on always being happy?! It drives me nuts! ... and also, I have become fascinated with trying to figure out what is behind the denial. It seems to be sexual in nature. After all, the two main culprits in the destruction of Scissor-boys reputations were corrupting the others thoughts for sexual reasons. That one woman was denied sex from him, and the boyfriend was a control freak who didn't want Edward near "his" girlfriend.
Ah, but that's movie magic. I beg to differ. Why do you think movies use sex? Sex sells. Why does it sell? Eh? Answer that and avoid religion and religious thinking (wishful thinking) entirely and you might have some sort of case to make. Religion memetically grabs people by their genitals and never let's go, even through millions of generations. Masturbation is evil! Evil I tell you!
